Habitat – Wall models
Wall
+ Description
—
Habitat began to take shape in 2017, emerging from an extensive exploration of how techniques and materials traditionally used in eyewear production could be applied to furniture design. With the intent of combining thought, design, and formal purity, Giovanni Botticelli investigates and reinterprets a material familiar to him: cellulose acetate. He explores welding and bending techniques, joining two or more colors by fusing acetate sheets with acetone under pressure, while thermo-bending draws from the tradition of “curved-front” eyewear models. The color palette is inspired by independent eyewear design, emphasizing striking contrasts between tortoiseshell, single-color transparent, and opaline shades. The result is an installation that functions as a scaled translation of architectural languages and forms, suggesting correspondences between essential codes and pure geometries. Exhibited in the gallery, the collection includes wall shelving, tables, and boxes — furnishings conceived as spaces where memories reside, preserving the precious history of our objects. Botticelli creates a family of interior micro-architectures that seem to emerge from fragments of imaginary buildings, where rigorous design meets experimentation, enhancing the creative potential of a single material. Habitat was exclusively designed for SWING Design Gallery and produced in a limited, numbered edition. Special thanks are extended to Mazzucchelli 1849, the historic company based in Castiglione Olona, founded in 1849 as a small workshop producing combs and buttons from horn and bone, and today a world leader in the production and distribution of cellulose acetate. The Habitat collection was presented in a solo exhibition in June 2019 and consists of 3 side tables, 3 decorative shelving units, and 3 jewelry boxes.
